It's ball-shattering cold outside!

with the windchill, it's -45 (that's -49 farenheit for those in the us).
had to let the truck warm up for a good 10 minutes today, and it was solid as a rock (yes, it was plugged in).

If The Society REALLY Wanted To Spread The "Good News", What Would They Do?
by minimus inthe preaching "work" is a big joke!!

How about stop teaching that doctrines are what defile a person and get their members to be more active. The "preaching work" has become for many simply a way of doing what we need to be saved, not doing what we feel is correct. Heaven forbid we help somebody who DOSN'T want to be a witness.

Comments that made feel pity at last Sundays WT study
by drew sagan ini believe it was paragraph 17, the one that spoke about the faithful slave and how there are those who wish to be "independent" and that this is wrong.
two comments came, both from elders.
elder 1: so what the paragraph is telling us is that instead of developing an independent spirit we actually want to be developing a spirit of dependece upon god's organization and the spiritual food they provide.

A Paduan, I know where you are coming from. I tend to look at it from the fact that I was once in the same mental state as them, just like I think many of us where. It's that state of mind we all know to be so powerful over us. It's just amazes me to look back and think about how I was in that mindset. Breaking free from it hasn't changed the fact that I foolishly subjected myself to it in the past. I guess when I see it in others, especially those in whom I know could be much more, it becomes unpleasent to me.

The issues you mentioned, trinity and hellfire are major issues that the Watchtower uses to persuade it's members into thinking they have absolute truth. Members are taught things "from the Bible" that are easy to understand and make sense. They begin to trust the Society. Once their trust has been gained, they are then encouraged to "have faith" in Gods organization. In essence, Jehovah's Witnesses eventually become what they condem in others, mainly followers of a man made religion. This is well hidden, and most members do not realize it.
Many go after the Society saying that their ideas on the trinity are wrong, and that there is hellfire, and other things such as this. That kind of discussion to me is pointless. Take this point, even if they DO have logical correct doctrinal points, does that make them God's only approved worship? JW's are lead to believe the answer to this is, YES!
The reason I suggested reading the Revelation and Daniel book is because they give you a glimpse into what the WTS is really all about, their own interpretation of the Bible. You will see their very self centered theories claiming that they alone have Gods favor, sometimes spelt out in very vivid and arrogent ways.
The biggest mistake I ever made with the Witnesses (and what I think most of us has made) is that we got convinced by their reasonings to early, to soon. They constantly point to the Bible as their guide, and to most new members it really appears that it is that way. Only by digging deeper into the religion will you be able to see that not everything is "Bible based" but is also based upon their own opinions. Like every other Christian group, they have their own bias in interpreting the scriptures. Good luck. -

ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT JW'S THAT ARE NOT IN THE BOOK!
That book is so general, it says nothing of what the Watchtower really is! I suggest looking around the various sites and getting info on stuff like
-607 B.C.E. not a historical date
-Disfellowshipping
-Failed date interpretations (1874,1914,1925,1975)
I also suggest get copies of their more "internal" books, such as the Daneil book and the Revelation book. The revelation book will blow your mind! It is full of crazy theories about how Gods purpose is all tied into the Watchtower and "modern day fullfillment". I suggest reading this stuff early, it gives you a taste of what the religion is really all about. -

Thanks for the compliment chris! And to AuldSoul, I don't know if we really have the expierance to say that global warming is all it's cracked up to be. Especially with that crazy Medieval Warm Period thing. We're too early in the stage. Only time will tell. Where I live is supposed to be winter but today some are wearing t-shirts. Crazy world.

I don't mind at all! To many people actually think that's me. I guess I should have used a picture of Ben Stiller or something, somebody a little more familiar.
Long live Carl, the great skeptic that he was. He is one of the biggest reasons I started to question the WTS. I remember reading this quote a long time ago (so it seems now):
Doctrines that make no predictions are less compelling than those which make correct predictions; they are in turn more successful than doctrines that make false predictions.
But not always. One prominent American religion confidently predicted that the world would end in 1914. Well, 1914 has come and gone, and -- while the events of that year were certainly of some importance -- the world does not, at least so far as I can see, seem to have ended. There are at least three responses that an organized religion can make in the face of such a failed and fundamental prophecy. They could have said, "Oh, did we say '1914'? So sorry, we meant '2014.' A slight error in calculation. Hope you weren't inconvenienced in any way." But they did not. They could have said, "Well, the world would have ended, except we prayed very hard and interceded with God so He spared the Earth." But they did not. Instead, they did something much more ingenious.
They announced that the world had in fact ended in 1914, and if the rest of us hadn't noticed, that was our lookout. It is astonishing in the face of such transparent evasions that this religion has any adherents at all. But religions are tough. Either they make no contentions which are subject to disproof or they quickly redesign doctrine after disproof. The fact that religions can be so shamelessly dishonest, so contemptuous of the intelligence of their adherents, and still flourish does not speak very well for the tough-mindedness of the believers. But it does indicate, if a demonstration were needed, that near the core of the religious experience is something remarkably resistant to rational inquiry. -
